How to Spend 24 Hours in Phuket By Matt Crook

How to Spend 24 Hours in Phuket By Matt Crook

So you're going to Phuket and you only have 24 hours to spend on Thailand's most popular island. What do you do? There are heaps of options for people visiting Phuket, but if you only have a short time to spend in Phuket, you're going to want to hit all the best spots.

First thing to do is find yourself somewhere to stay. Patong is a little too full on for a brief stopover in Phuket, so it's better to find a guesthouse or hotel somewhere in Phuket Town, which is a sleepy part of the island with lots of interesting buildings and places to explore.

Once you have your digs sorted, buy a map and rent a motorcycle. A motorbike is the easiest and most cost efficient way to get around the island. Take some time to ride around Phuket Town and get a feel for the place before heading off to Chalong to visit the island's best temple, Wat Chalong.

There are some great photo opportunities to be had at Wat Chalong, especially from the top of the 60-meter-tall chedi. An hour or so should do the trick before it's time to tackle the large hill that leads to Phuket's Big Buddha statue, which is conveniently close to Wat Chalong.

The Big Buddha statue is an immense sight and there are some killer views from the top of the hill. It's all very romantic and scenic. Once you've had enough of the statue, find Promthep Cape on your map and put the pedal to the metal to reach there before the sun goes down.

Promthep Cape is the best place in Phuket to watch the sunset. The views out over Nai Harn are breathtaking. You certainly won't be alone, but Promthep Cape is never overcrowded.

Traveling around Phuket is hungry work, so dinner of Thai food at Natural Restaurant in Phuket Town (Soi Phutorn, off Rasada Road Circle, turn left at Chinese shrine) should do the trick. With only one night on the island, it's not worth trundling all the way to Phuket to see a little of the nightlife scene, so make a beeline for KorTorMor on Chana Charoen Rd. It's a local club that attracts a large crowd, especially on the weekends. If you want more come closing time, James Garden on Poonpol Rd Soi 1 is a late-night beer garden.

After a good night's sleep there's nothing better than a breakfast of Thai street food, so find somewhere with food that looks appetizing and tuck in.

All of this will make for a fun-filled 24 hours and it didn't even involve taking in any of Phuket's many beaches. Twenty-hour hours just isn't enough, so why not stay a little longer?

You certainly won't be able to do everything if only have 24 hours in Phuket, but with the right choice of sites, Phuket restaurants and nightlife, any trip to the island can be worthwhile. Find more information about Phuket over at Phuket Vogue.
