Pattaya, Thailand - A Good Family Vacation Destination? By Harri Brent

Pattaya, Thailand - A Good Family Vacation Destination?
By Harri Brent

This question is being asked often by Parents who consider visiting Pattaya with their children but they are unsure because of Pattaya's reputation. Such names as Extreme City, Sin City and others come to mind that might scare parents.

Over the past years the type of tourists visiting Pattaya has changed. Many Russian tourists and eastern Europeans are part of the landscape of visitors now. Pattaya is not only a destination for single men from around the world anymore. Russian couples and families are a large part of the tourism scene.

Pattaya has been known for over four decades for its vibrant and wild nightlife and there is no doubt that Pattaya will always make most of its revenue from the nightlife entertainment areas.

Pattaya's Nightlife and adult entertainment centers are found mostly in Walking Street and between Pattaya Beach Road to second Road. Many bars can be found on third road as well. There are other 'pockets' of nightlife and adult entertainment in some areas of Naklua and Jomtien but by far not as widespread and raunchy.

Jomtien offers a great destination for families and the further east on Jomtien Beach the quieter the beach is and there are hardly any bars. There are wonderful hotels and resorts which are very family friendly and offer everything you can ask for. Water sports like jet skis, windsurfing, parasailing and any water sport you can imagine is available here.

Pattaya has a famous Tiger Zoo, a crocodile farm, the sanctuary of truth, mini Siam, Ripley's Believe or not and the Pattaya water park just to mention a few things to do in and around Pattaya.

Pattaya's convenient location from the International Bangkok Airport makes Pattaya a great vacation destination. Only about 1 1/2 hours by taxi or bus.

Pattaya offers a culinary feast for everyone and every taste. International Restaurants mixed with local Thai food stalls and restaurants offer just about any kind of food you can imagine.

Transportation is available at any time of the day or night. A baht bus (mini bus) from Jomtien to Pattaya costs 10 Baht per person. A car can be rented starting from 500 Baht a day. A scooter can be rented starting at 150 Baht a day.

The unrests in Bangkok kept many tourists from visiting Thailand this year '2008'. As unfortunate as it is for many businesses it is a great time to visit because there are a lot less tourists this year. Some newspapers report a 20-30 % drop in tourism and rising.

Unfortunate for businesses but it sure is nice because Pattaya will not be crowded this high season.

It's a perfect time to visit Pattaya, Thailand.

Vacation in Pattaya Thailand - Travel Tips From an Insider By Edwin M Clark

Vacation in Pattaya Thailand - Travel Tips From an Insider
By Edwin M Clark

Pattaya Thailand may not have the same glitz and glamour as Cannes France. Yet this seaside city on the southern coast of Thailand manages to pull over 1 million tourist a year. Pattaya invented its own category, its on special vibe and reputation for having one of the wildest nightlife scene in this tiny sliver of Southeast Asia. Sure it may be short on class when you compare it to the stuffy clubs and bars in Cannes with its $2,000 champagnes. But where else are you going to find bars with names like "Beavers" serving ice cold Tiger beer for $2?

Navigating amongst Pattaya's many sois or "Side Street" (in foreigner speak) of bars, clubs, pubs and massage parlors is not so difficult. Where ever you find gaudy neon lights you are bound to find some assortment of male recreation befitting all appetites. And of course outside of said establishments you can find a myriad of Thai women hounding you to patron their place of work, promising you a time you will never forget.

Pattaya city can be broken up into two sections; North Pattaya and South Pattaya. Most visitors to Pattaya converge on Walking Street located in southern Pattaya which is most well known for its no holds barred nightlife venues. The bright neon lights and skull jarring hip hop beats. Thai woman (and transvestites), tugging and pulling at your shirt sleeves make you feel like you are taking a stroll inside a life sized arcade pin ball machine. Walking Street is considered the epicenter, the crust of all that is unholy and seedy in this part of Pattaya. But upon closer inspection you will find Irish pubs, various other watering holes and well established restaurants run mostly by foreign expats. These are places filled visitors from all over the world just sitting and chatting, without a lady sitting on their laps. Then you realize Pattaya is not just all about sex and sin.

Pattaya is about rest and recreation, the famous R&R phrase used by US soldiers from the Vietnam war era who changed the face of this once quiet seaside fishing village forever. Where once army boots pounded the streets long ago, today are being patrolled by slipper wearing backpackers and even by elderly tourist who curiously peek at the go-go dancer, who lure men in like a seasoned fisherman.

Through the years Pattaya has set her own standards and charm as one of the world's foremost party and relaxation destinations. She may not have famous celebrities and movie stars sunning themselves on their million dollar yachts there, but Pattaya Thailand can still cast a charm on any soul beckoning them to return again and again.

Pattaya Hotels in Thailand - Where to Find the Best By Edwin M Clark

Pattaya Hotels in Thailand - Where to Find the Best
By Edwin M Clark

Pattaya City is one of the most visited destinations in Thailand. It's close proximity to the capital city of Bangkok makes Pattaya the closest get away beach resort. But Pattaya is not most well known for its beaches. No, for beaches its better to take a tour outside of Pattaya for snorkeling and swimming. Pattaya is most well known for it raucous seedy nightlife that attracts men from all over the world like children to Disney Land.

Now if you are a first time visitor to Pattaya and would like to enjoy its nightlife offerings you should stay on or near Walking Street. Walking Street is jam packed with bars of every imaginable kind. You can find pool bars, go-go bars, hostess bars, beer gardens or large outdoor pubs. And in these establishment which oddly enough are owned by expats are filled with Thai women who keep company with customers. My personal advice is that you should go check out their coyote bar clubs.

Now I wouldn't recommend Pattaya for families, but I do see vacationing Western parents covering the eyes of their little ones every time they pass by a go-go bar. So for whatever reason, if you have a family and you want to take them to Pattaya, its better off that you stay away from Walking Street and Pattaya Beach during night time. As for accommodations it would be a good idea to stay in hotels near Jomtien Beach which is due south of Pattaya Beach. I actually prefer Jomtien Beach and if I had kids I'd prefer them to play there instead.

There is another beach area where you can still be close to the heart of the nightlife in Pattaya and its called Wong Amat Beach. The hotels in Wong Amat Beach are also suitable for children and the hotels and resorts there are among some of the best.

So those are the three main locations for hotels. Now as far as pricing goes Pattaya hotels base their rates on season and location. The high season is typically from October to April, the coolest months. During the low season you can find hotel room rates slashed by at least half. I hear a lot of other hotel reviews say that hotel rates are cheaper outside of Pattaya Beach. My opinion is that hotels near Pattaya beach are worth their price in value. Because its close to the nightlife action and very convenient. I know for a fact that hotels are better priced and you get more for your money when you are closer to the nightlife action of Pattaya. Why?

Well because the area of Pattaya Beach have the most concentrations of hotels who are fighting tooth and nail for your business. So they are competing against each other which is good news for you. Also you don't need to travel far to enjoy the nightlife. Choosing a hotel in Pattaya Thailand gives many advantages to travelers. With a low currency base and the wonderful services and accommodations, Thailand offers a vacation of a lifetime, without breaking the bank.

Pattaya Apartments - How to Find the Right Apartment By Harri Brent

Pattaya Apartments - How to Find the Right Apartment
By Harri Brent

Get to know Pattaya before you rent an apartment in Pattaya for long term. Rent a Motorbike or scooter and explore Pattaya for a few days if you are new to Pattaya. Visit as many areas as you can. You will see which areas you like and which areas fit your budget if you are on a budget.

Most Apartment complexes won't rent to you for less than 3 - 6 months during high season. You want to make sure you like the area that you will be living in. There are as many apartments in Pattaya as there are grains of sand on the beaches in Pattaya.

You will find very large apartment complexes with hundreds of apartments and you will find smaller buildings with 10, 20 or 30 units. You will see so-called serviced apartments which mean nothing more than "ready to move in".

Bring a notepad along and take notes of the areas you like most. Stop by apartment complexes and find the owner, manager or management office. The manager will most likely speak some English.

Talk to tenants and find out if they like living there and if they know about issues, if any. Once you found and narrowed down on an apartment, visit the apartment and area during different times of the day and night. This is important! This is Thailand. You don't want to find out about bars that stay open all night right on your doorstep after you paid your rent and your deposit.

Standard deposit is usually one month rent, but it may be a little bit more than that if there will be a cleaning fee when you move out. Rents vary from as little as 3,500 Baht to 10's of thousands a month depending on size, location, furniture, whether it has a kitchen or not and much more.

Apartments for less than 3500 Baht a month may not be suitable for most westerners. I have seen very nice and clean apartments for 3,500 Baht and I have seen not so nice ones for 10,000 Baht. For 10,000 Baht a month you should be able to rent a very nice 1 room studio style Apartment with a good kitchen and nice furniture.

Understand how much you will be paying for water and electricity. I have heard of low rents but extremely high charges for water and power. Make sure you write down the water and power reading when you move in. Get a copy of the apartment rules if one is available.

Other Things To Consider :
  • Check that the power works including light fixtures
  • Check there is water in kitchen, bath, and shower
  • Do you need Air Conditioning?
  • Do the windows have screens?
  • Is there safe parking?
  • Make your list...

Pattaya is not your normal kind of city. It is a party town in many areas and when you choose to rent an apartment you may want to check out the vicinity during daytime and nighttime. Are there any bars close by? Bars can be fun for someone coming to visit Pattaya for a short time. Bars may not be so much fun if you have one in your backyard. Bars in Pattaya oftentimes stay open 24/7.

Information About Specialty Resorts Located in Pattaya, Thailand By Kristi Ambrose

Information About Specialty Resorts Located in Pattaya, Thailand
By Kristi Ambrose

Like many other people, when it comes to traveling I'm pretty well-rounded as far as where I have been and what I have experienced. I have visited almost every single state in the US plus I have visited a few other places as well such as France, Tuscany, Australia and, you guessed it, Thailand.

If I had to make a top ten list it would be incredibly hard considering there are so many beautiful places to visit on the planet but, if I absolutely had to, I would definitely pick Thailand and place it somewhere between Japan and Rome. Thailand or even more specific Pattaya resides on the east coast Gulf of Thailand about 165 km southeast of Bangkok.

Officially titled as The Kingdom Of Thailand this popular country has more visitors than any other country in Southeast Asia and with the incredible combo of both natural beauty, amazing temples and exquisite culinary options, very few countries match up! One of the main attractions in Pattaya is the wonderfully exotic beaches, and also the beach resorts.

There are several different specialty hotels and resorts that offer all kinds of extras that you might not see in places such as the United States. Of course in the USA we have hotels called "boutiques" but it is nothing like Pattaya has to offer. Listed below you will find my top three picks of the best beach resorts located in Pattaya, all of these resorts offer something special so please make sure you take time to read them!

Royal Cliff Beach Resort & Spa - This is one of the very few resorts that actually offers M.I.C.E service which is organized to allow customers such as yourself to have everything you need, allocated in one place. I like to call these "one stop shops." M.I.C.E is an acronym which stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions.

This resort in particular offers 1,200 rooms, 10 award winning restaurants such as Grill Room & Wine Cellar, Maharani, Panorama, Larn Thong & Terrace, Japanese Corner, Palm Terrace and the Royal Bar. All of these restaurants can be found on the website which also include all the information about the restaurant as well as a 360 degree virtual tour!

The Royal Cliff also offers a private beach area which are all within walking distance of an 8000 seat exhibition and convention hall with 56 meeting rooms, and as if that weren't enough, the hall has 5 star catering! The resort is also conveniently located a half kilometer from the airport! This place is absolutely amazing, I only hope you take the time to check it out!

Garden Cliff Resort & Spa - This hotel in particular is much smaller than the Royal Cliff but still just as beautiful! It has about 240 rooms and is located in the east of Thailand close to the sea. The atmosphere surrounding the outside and inside of the building are constructed so that it created harmony with the environment. The building is composed of lobby, coffee shop, ballroom and conference room and the recreation part for example massage room, outdoor swimming pool, etc. Really nice pics so make sure you check the site out!

Riviera Resort - And this is smaller yet, with only about 60 rooms. However, 60 rooms isn't bad at all for what this resort offers, it's not supposed to be a top dog like the other two, this one really is just for people that are looking for something super relaxing, very inexpensive and very quaint.

This would probably be good if you wanted to go somewhere by yourself or maybe even with kids. The other two are great if you want to do business or go with a group of friends or a group of people that are business associates. This place is nice as well however, I find that it has a very nice ambiance.

This author is a HUGE fan of Royal Cliff

The History of Phuket By James Bukovsky

The History of Phuket
By James Bukovsky

Phuket History

The first records in Phuket history originate in the beginning of the 11th century. As far as historians have been able to trace, the first inhabitants of what is now known as Phuket were the sea gypsy's and the Negrito's.

Phuket Negritos

The Negritos are considered by historians to be the indigenous inhabitants of South East Asia. The Negritos include tribes from the Malay Peninsula, Andaman tribes, Pilipino tribes and the Semang tribes. The Negritos were small people and were pygmy sized. They are in fact considered to be among the smallest races when looking at population size. Genetic expert consider the DNA of the Negritos to be among the purest of any human race.

Junk Ceylon

Junk Ceylon was the first name of Phuket in its history. Historians have found the original name of Phuket on the maps of Portuguese sea merchant maps. There was an earlier mention of Junk Ceylon in a book written in the year of 157 AD. The book was written by a well known Greek philosopher. Cladius Ptolemy.

The Greek philosopher mentioned that if one was to travel to the Malaysian peninsula, one would have to pass a cape which he called the Junk Ceylon. The Junk Ceylon was given a location between the latitudes of 6 N and 8 N which would be the position of present day Phuket. It seems that the Junk Ceylon was visited by sea merchant from various countries as the bay of Junk Ceylon offered a superb protection against the forces of nature and gave the merchants an opportunity to rest and restock.

Recent Phuket History

Phuket become later known as Thalang after the city which still exists in the northern region of Phuket. An important part of Phuket history was during the 15th century when Phuket obtained the reputation as a leading tin mining producer. Due to the local mining industry, Phuket become somewhat of a trading hub.

Due to the large volume of European merchants and traders that were calling port in Thalang, the Thai King during that period decided that Phuket should be administered by a European. Between the period of 1681 and 1685, Thalang was administered by a French missionary named Renee Charbonneau.

Burmese Invasion

Another important event in Phuket history was in 1785 when enemy troops from neighboring Burma attempted to invade and rule Phuket. Two Phuket ladies decided to stand up and defend the Island in the name of the King of Thailand. The former governor's widow, Chan, and her loyal sister Muk organized a defense which lasted nearly a month.

The Burmese troops were left with no supplies after they had been unable to get past the defence for over a month. The aggresors had no other option but to withdraw as their suplies had run. The king of Thailand heard of the heroic actions of the two sisters and bestowed upon them the noble titles of Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon. Even in present day Phuket, the two sisters have not been forgotten and are in fact still honored and respected. In 1966 the two sisters were honored by their very own statue which stands at the Tha Ruea Intersection.

Annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival Becoming Major Tourist Lure By Isla Campbell

Annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival Becoming Major Tourist Lure
By Isla Campbell

Vegetarianism is on the increase in the UK and it's now rare to find a restaurant that doesn't serve a veggie option or two. A lot of reasons are given for this dietary choice - environmental, moral or personal taste are the most common - but many see it as a recent fad.

Although it's becoming more popular in Britain, typically vegetarians are more common in Asian countries and some, such as Thailand, hold an annual vegetarian festival where everybody joins in.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is held in the ninth lunar month of every year for nine days. During this time the participants eat no meat, wear white clothing, and focus on the cleanliness of their mind and body.

Legend has it that the first ever festival was held in 1825, when a group of travelling Chinese entertainers became ill and in an effort to heal themselves, took up a vegetarian diet and prayed to their emperor gods. The locals watched in astonishment as the visitors got better and the diet, along with the religious ceremonies were seen as the cause. To ensure good health and fortune for themselves they then began to celebrate the festival each year.

As well as the exclusion of eating meat, those who join in the festival also take part in the ceremonies. These can sometimes include gruelling activities such as walking over hot coals or puncturing their own cheeks with items such as knives and skewers.

As well as this festival, Phuket, and Thailand in general, has a lot to offer. Famed for its picturesque views and natural beauty, Thailand boasts some of the most stunning locations to watch sunsets from and Phuket itself has forests, waterfalls and a jungle to explore.

The Thai island of Koh Samui is also a great spot for tourists looking for nature as it is the home of white beaches, coconut trees and coral reefs. Because of its lush surroundings, it is full of wildlife - the Samui Aquarium has a wide variety of tropical fish and marine creatures and the island's zoo has Bengal tigers and leopards on display all year round.

The country's capital, Bangkok, is the most popular destination in Thailand and it is revered as one of the world's top tourist spots; winning many awards in this vein. It boasts many historical palaces that are open to the public and also is also the home to many more modern delights such as theatres and shopping centres.

Whether or not the vegetarian festival is of interest to you, Phuket holidays offer many different options whether you choose to stay on the island or travel around the rest of the country.

Getting to Phuket, Thailand By Orson Johnson

Getting to Phuket, Thailand
By Orson Johnson

Phuket is one of the more popular travel destinations within Southeast Asia due to its gorgeous beaches, scrumptious food, great shopping, exciting nightlife and the countless recreational opportunities it offers to people of all backgrounds. It is located in the South of Thailand and is in fact Thailand's largest island. Generally, people reach Phuket by air, bus or ferry.

By Air - The main airport is Phuket International Airport, which is also one of Thailand's busiest airports. There are direct international flights from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Macao and Seoul. During peak periods, there are also direct charters from Europe and Australia. If you are from other parts of Thailand, such as Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya and Ko Samui, there are also low-cost domestic carriers that can bring you to Phuket. The main airlines that the airport caters to are Thai Airways, Silk Air and Malaysian Airlines. There are also a number of budget carriers that flight here, such as Thai AirAsia, Tiger Airways, Firefly and Nok Air. Once you have gotten past baggage clearance, you can choose to take the limousine taxis, metered taxis or minibus services to get to your intended destination. There are also airport shuttles which run every half an hour or so. These shuttles will drop you off at Phuket Town bus station where you can hop onto local buses that will take you to all the major beaches in Phuket.

By Bus - If you are on mainland Thailand in places such as Bangkok, Hat Yai or Krabi, you can reach Phuket by bus. Be sure to buy tickets from trustworthy bus companies as there are some bus companies with reputations for overcharging, theft and overall bad service. In general, buses will drop you off at the BKS terminal which is on Thanon Phang Na in Phuket Town. From here, you can take a taxi or bus to your location. You can even hop onto a local contraption called tuk-tuk which is a cheap and fast way to travel in Thailand.

By Ferry - If you are from Ko Phi Phi, Krabi, Ko Racha or the Similan Islands, you may want to consider taking the ferry service to Phuket. Such ferry services run twice a day for about two hours. They make for very pleasant rides but the journey can be somewhat turbulent if there is a storm. There are also several cruises that take their passengers to Phuket.

The Amari Coral Resort in Phuket Review By Edwin M Clark

The Amari Coral Resort in Phuket Review
By Edwin M Clark

The Amari hotel group is a name that is synonymous with excellent customer satisfaction, service and grand properties. They mainly operate hotels and resorts that are in the 4 and 5 star ranges. Their name marks the finest hotels and resorts throughout the Kingdom of Thailand. All of their properties are located on or near centers of major activity and they have beautiful resorts in many of Thailand's most famous pristine beaches.

One of the Amari's finest resorts is located in one of the most famous islands in Thailand, the island of Phuket pronounced Poo-Ket. The name of this propery is called the Amari Coral Resort. This resort is relatively new and located on top of a hill on the southern tip of Patong Beach. The hill was the saving grace that spared this property from the destruction of the 2004 Tsunami. The location of the resort is situated not too far from the hub of town activity yet far enough to remain quiet and offer their guests peace and relaxation.

You will know you are staying at a grand resort when you first enter one of the most beautiful open air lobbies you will ever see. You can watch the huge panorama of sparkling blue ocean water behind you while you wait for your room keys. The only small issue that I have with the Amari Coral Resort is the elevators which are small and not airconditioned. Luckily the elevator to the room levels below is a short ride. However, I heard they were in the process for replacing the elevators soon though.

Now here is a tip. Since the Amari Coral Resort is located on top of a small hill, you may have to make quite a walk to your room. So it is best to request a room close by. Don't worry about your luggage. They will have a porter take it to your room.

All of the Amari Coral Resorts rooms face the ocean with unobstructed views. There are small patios with chairs to relax. The view is magnificent with their private beach just a few minutes walk away. A private beach is a valuable commodity in Phuket if you want to avoid the over crowded Patong Beach just north of the resort.

You can literally make your vacation just by staying at the resort, which many people do, such as medical tourists. With a private beach, two beautiful pools, award winning spa services and four notable restaurants, staying at the Amari Coral Resort will make you regret leaving Phuket.

Edwin M. Clark is a business consultant who travels to South East Asia, specifically to Thailand for over 8 years. His experience and knowledge in the region has provided valuable information and resources for business venturers and mid range to major corporations in the travel industry.

Patong Remains Phuket's Most Popular Beach Spot By Matt Crook

Patong Remains Phuket's Most Popular Beach Spot
By Matt Crook

Phuket is one of Thailand's top tourist destinations. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the white isle in search of sun, sea and a lot more besides. Tourism has taken a lot of knocks in recent years, what with the tsunami and internal problems, but Phuket still manages to attract a decent crowd no matter what. Although numbers are down after the latest spat of political turmoil, Phuket is still the island of choice for most visitors, and no beach seduces tourists quite like Patong Beach.

To look at Patong Beach, you'd wonder just what it is about the place that keeps travelers coming back in their droves. Patong isn't Phuket's most scenic place, but it does have a lot going for it. The beach itself has seen better days. What were once stretches of gorgeous white sand have become overcrowded and inundated with sun loungers and parasols.

The beach is also not as clean as it has been in the past, thanks to the large number of tourists and hawkers. But Patong is about more than just the beach. If you want unspoiled scenery, Mai Khao, Nai Yang and a host of other beach spots are just a short drive away. What Patong Beach has going for it is convenience. Everything you could think of for a holiday is right their on your doorstep.

The variety of accommodation in Patong is unsurpassed anywhere else on the island. Whether you're a backpacker on a shoestring budget or a honeymooner looking for something romantic for you and your loved on, Patong has it all, with no budget left uncatered to.

Then there is Patong's dining scene, which remains more vibrant and chock full of choice than any other part of Phuket. Whatever your preference, be it for pasta, seafood or fajitas, there are enough restaurants in Patong to please even the choosiest of travelers.

You can't, however, talk about Patong Beach without mentioning the nightlife. It's what makes Patong famous, and also very noisy. For a long time, the nightlife in Patong was primarily about go-go bars and beer bars. To a certain extent, this is still the case. Throngs of tourists come with one thing in mind: meeting Thai girls. Romantic, it ain't, but the sex industry in Patong is not likely to disappear any time soon.

Patong has more to offer than just girly bars. Rockers can mosh at Rock City, dancers can boogie away at La Salsa and serious clubbers can get down at Club Lime. There really is something for everyone at Patong Beach.

There are so many Phuket beaches that it can be difficult to choose which one is right for you. There's no doubt that Patong Beach has a lot to offer, but Phuket is large enough that there is no harm in moving about from one place to the next to get a feel for which areas are the best.

Club Lime Still Phuket's Best Clubbing Venue By Matt Crook

Club Lime Still Phuket's Best Clubbing Venue
By Matt Crook

Rewind a few years and clubbing in Phuket was in a dire state. There was nothing but pop and cheesy techno, along with clubs playing local rock and country music. Times have changed, and visitors to Phuket now have a far superior choice of clubs to select from, and nowhere does it better than Club Lime in Patong.

What Phuket was missing for a long time was a venue championing the finer sounds of dance music. It was possible to hear zany chipmunk techno music, but for something with a little more soul, you had to look to Bangkok or else outside of Thailand. There are currently a small group of DJs in Phuket who have been steadily helping to build a vibrant clubbing scene in Phuket.

Club Lime first opened its doors a couple of years ago. The club had style and was a far cry from the typical beer bars and cheesy discos that Phuket is famous for. Club Lime was more like the type of venue you could find in England or America. It had the drinks prices to match, but it was difficult to complain because of the music policy.

From the beginning, the people behind Club Lime made a point to book serious DJs with a passion for the music they were playing. DJs such as Eddy and D[r]eadmongey rose to fame at Club Lime, playing everything from house to techno. But Club Lime didn't stop there. Every week it was possible to hear breaks, electro and even drum n bass.

What has helped cement Club Lime's reputation has been the string of quality DJs booked to play from overseas. These include everyone from Barry Ashworth and Jo Mills to Kraf

Interview on Fishing in Phuket, Thailand With Wahoo's John Pearce By Simon Ramsden

Interview on Fishing in Phuket, Thailand With Wahoo's John Pearce
By Simon Ramsden

Simon: What changes have you noticed since you started sport-fishing in Phuket?

John: Over the past two decades Phuket has earned the right to be classed as a true big game fishing destination, offering boats, an infrastructure and hotels of the standard well-heeled anglers expect. Over the last eighteen years that I have lived and fished the waters around Phuket as a fishing-charter captain I have seen many changes, some for the better, some for the worse - and also some things that have not changed at all.

Simon: Has the fishing got worse?

John: It hasn't got worse, it's got different as the fish have changed from always being at one island to suddenly appearing at one island or another in greater numbers. My own personal observation on what is happening is that we have seen a massive increase in the number of commercial boats chasing what I call 'baitfish', not only for human consumption, as in fish sauce, but also for making animal feeds for chickens. Fish are creatures of habit and if suddenly the food that they have been used to getting in a particular spot is not there any more they will move and find another source.

Simon: So, with all that happening, is Phuket a good fishing destination?

John: Absolutely, yes it is! Many of our anglers have had the best battles of their lives, especially with the large numbers of sailfish around the Islands of Racha Yai and Racha Noi, even in the low-tourist season of May- September. Some lucky anglers have even gone home having had the thrill of catching one of the decent-sized black marlin that appear between October and April.

Simon: Why come to Phuket?

John: I have been lucky enough to have visited some of the great fishing capitals of the world, so I am confident in giving you these main reasons why you should put Phuket on your map of destinations if you are a fishing enthusiast. Let's start with the international airport, which is very close to most of our two-star to five-star and above hotels and which is linked to most countries, either directly or through Bangkok. Thai people are the friendliest and smiliest folk on the planet. They serve superb, mouth-wateringly delicious and varied food. The island is blessed with lovely beaches and offers excellent and extremely varied alternative activities for non-angling companions. Phuket offers some of the best fishing to be found in Asia, on good boats which are reasonably priced and which have friendly crews, many of whom can speak reasonable English. So if you are on holiday and fancy a day or a week's fishing, get in touch with one of the local operators and have yourself a ball. And I almost forgot: we have award-winning cold beer as well!

Simon Ramsden is resident in Ao Nang, Thailand and runs Thailand climbing trips to Koh Lao Liang, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Phi Phi and Railay/Tonsai.
